On Saturday we started a three-day-trip to 'Lemington National Park' two hours drive south and a little bit inland. Again I had real Camper-feeling, while we were organizing our stuff: buying food, cleaning up the van and collecting all this camping stuff. As usually we were pretty late when we left, but after 'Corindi' we were used to cooking in the dark. The way to the National Park lead us through beautiful landscape comparable to hilly european landscape. Until we met the 'Alps'. At least it looked like them, when we drove up the serpentines. Very narrow streets sometimes even only one lane. So it was already an adventure to get to the Lemington National Park, which is named after an Australian owner of a sawmill (irony of destiny), who introduced the idea to protect this area. When we arrived at the top of the mountain, the campsite were almost completely covered in clouds, the air was beautiful fresh and it was peacefully quiet. We were visited by Wallabies (small Kangaroos) soon. The first night was sweetened with a lovely dinner and again the first night in which we could cuddle in our sleeping bags, as we were used to in good old freezing Germany ;-). The morning brought sun, but no annoying heat, like in Brisbane. Then we decided to take the 15km route along some waterfalls and the 'Blue Pool'. But first we had to watch those beautiful birds picking grain from our hands. Then we started the hike. We stepped on an amazing "tree top walk", leading through the top of the trees in about 25m height, as it says. After that we enthusiastic walked further on into the real "Cold Jungle".
Soon we saw the first "Fig tree": those trees are more like lianes, which grow around the trunk and up the whole tree. (w)Hole is the right keyword to describe what happens then: after the host tree doesn't get enough fresh air and is almost fully overgrown, most of them die. Only the new "Fig Tree" stays and because it growed 'around' the host-tree it is hollow. Most of the "Fig Trees" have also holes at the bottom, so that you can step into them. Now you know how this picture through the tree up into the air was made ;-)
Now that we really took our time for this amazing trees, we noticed, that we should go on a little bit quicker, because we still had plenty of kilometers to walk. We wandered on narrow pathes on cliffy mountainsides along a sweet small river. Sometimes we lost the path for a moment, because huge trees lay cross it, so that we had to make a detour. Sometimes, we lost the path, because we had to cross the river and everybody did it on his own way, so that we didn't have a clue where to go on. Crossing the river was fun everytime, because somebody tried to jump from one stone to another, Kerstin simply took off her shoes, Christian had waterproof sandals and I slipped, so that I had water cooled feet for the next hour ;-) As you can see on the photos, we passed several waterfalls and had a reviving rest and enjoyed pure nature, because while walking, we almost always had to watch our steps. Then we noted, that it became later and later and we had to walk even faster. I had the impression as if we were running through 'Rohan', like the dwarf and the elf in "The Lord of the Rings". Even the scenery was very similar to "Lord of the Rings". As it started to darken, Kerstin began to tell scary stories. Everybody tried to frighten someone else and made strange noises. Finally it was really dark in the forest and Torsten - our perfect equipped sport teacher - took out his headlight and lead the way out of the forest. But at the end we were desperate to climb up a ladder 30 meter up a tree. Even that wasn't high enough for Kerstin and Torsten, so that they got off it and bravely climbed up another few meters. Thats where one of the last photo was made.
Later again we had a gorgeous dinner and left the next morning with the feeling that we experienced something really special.
Because Kerstin had to show up at work in time, we told our Bertha to show her excellent Rally qualities ;-)
Kerstin felt sick and I felt like finding out where the next Go-Kart track is...
